  1. Just finished reading the forum. Thank YOU C&C, the waitress, the good samaritan and his wife and any one else who helped these beautiful creatures. Please let Peenie know that Charm School is too far away for her right now. LOL She can attend later. Thank you for the amazing pictures as well. I am not on the forum, so would one of you please let them know I appreciate EVERYTHING!

    • Yes, and its a Must See ! Just scroll down under the comment box, see the second blue line that says second thread on CMNH forum, that’s it. Click on it, Go to page 27 or 28,? Youll see Peenies whole story and the pictures of Peenie looking inthe window are Hillarious!!!!!!!!!!!

      • I joined up today!!! YAY!. Nice forum, covers a lot of Ohio territory. I have the same screen name on CMNH and my Harley avatar 🙂 I’ve always been a wildlife enthusiast. Love birds of all kinds and can identify dozens on sight. I’m saving up for a better zoom lens for my digital camera but to tell the truth a lens for my Minolta or really old Canon AE-1 would be less expensive. But I like to take photos. I’ve got around 300 of just our Pomeranian dog I’ve had since 2008 🙂 Bought a decent Nikon digital single lens reflex a couple years ago but couldn’t afford a big zoom lens back then. I love Carl’s pictures. Those were done with a 70 – 300mm lens. You can tell quality when you see it.

    • Hi Suzette, you know how to get on the Canton Forum from where it says “second thread on CMNH forum”? Once you get to the Canton forum, go to the bottom of the page and clickon the arrow beside the box where you cantype… a whole list of various forums comes up. Go to couyahoga county forums, and the to the Hilliard Rd. Forum. (I think thats the one you want but if not it will be on that list somewhere) Its funny Ive done that hundreds of times, but now Im not certain im exactly right. Im going to go check myself, and if I told you something incorrect, Ill let you know…… There are days and days of forum reading for you there…. But Cantons is one of the most active…….

      • When you have jummped from the video cam blog to the Canton Falcon Forum, see where at the very bottom of the page it says “jump”, a box that says other forums,( or something) next to it, click on the gray arrow, and then on couyahoga county forums…. does that work?

        • Susan you are AMAZING.. Thank you so much for helping me locate my beautiful Chessie and McKinley. I found the Akron site. and their 4 little gals. I can not thank you enought for helping me learn so much in one day. I even got to see wonderful pic’s of Bandit. I had a chance to see him in “person” back in 2010 but didnt have a camera (or even a good lens on the camera) Thanks again you have made my day!!!

          • Suzette, you are very welcome! It makes me happy to think that I helped someone out… 🙂

  2. I was wondering, is there a special number we could phone if we were downtown and saw it to get help for a baby who managed to fledge itself into a dangerous area?

    • Well you certainly don’t want to grab it and get all bit and scratched up. You might try to herd it into a safer area and call Carl at CMH Electronics since he administrates this forum. If he doesn’t want the calls I’m sure he will post an emergency number.

      • Yes, sweetie, thats just it – I have no idea of who/ what to contact if I saw a baby down. Thank goodness Chris and Chad were here for Peenie…

        • Well I will try to answer that for you. Hopefully someone will chime in here before I can because it is a very good point.

        • Here is who to call 330-667-2386 🙂 Some detailed info..on if you find one on page 27 of the Canton forum. Hope that helps.

          • Funny- somehow that post got right by me. Thanks, Alison! I can not comment any further than this but I predict someone on the forum will be getting a letter from Italy if they ever cross paths LOL

  3. By the way, there is one little one sleeping in the box. Wondering if its Peenie, either exhausted from her adventure yesterday, or maybe pouting because they wouldnt let her attend the wedding…. LOL

    • LOL Too Funny! I absolutely adored those pictures of her looking in from the outside. Obviously she remembers the human exposure and
might have been thinking she could get some help. I imagine by now they are all very capable of inflicting some serious scratches and bites to use frail humans. So if you see one on the street the best you could expect to do is to corral it into a safer area. I’m sure if you call CMH Electronics during the business day they will be able to get ahold of Carl and he will know what to do with the fledge.

      • I have no intention of trying to touch it. Im just wondering if one of the folks who know would post a number where help could be gotten for the baby.

        • You can call the department of wildlife. DOW. They will advise and come the the rescue. The district numbers are on their website.

  4. Love all the comments. I will be busy. What a beautiful world of wildlife is out there. Thanks to everyone who has given me direction.. Havn’t seen much of the chicks today. So post those pictures when you get them. Checking out all the spots, (I think) Please help to keep these precious lives around.

  5. Just returned from a day of nest watching. Carrollton and I went this morning and stayed till 5 or so. Chad and Chris were there twice. Admin was there this morning also. They were all safely on the ledge when we left. Saw a great food pass between the adults. C & C have photos and we saw Mystic and Maurice defend against two turkey vultures that flew a little too close. Amazing sight.

    • I am trying to contain my excitement for C&C’s photo’s of the exchange…
My battery on my cam was to low and pics were blurry…not worth posting….
What a wonderful day it was for falcon watching downtown!!

    • Where do they hide out during the rain? I checked the cam a couple times when it was raining pretty good this early evening and the nest was empty. I would think that they would want to find some shelter out of the rain instead of just sitting out on the ledge.

      • When I got there sunday around 9am it rained lightly and during the rain, they all got excited and flapped and hopped all over….they liked it, as the rain is a bath to them…
There is a ledge below the cam ledge, that they jump down into and one cannot see them…it may offer some protection, but when they are older they will just use the rain as a bath. All birds have a oil gland just above the base of the tail.
After a night of rain, they will sit and preen, rubbing the oil with their beaks all over their feathers…
it (oil) conditions and helps keep the feathers somewhat waterproof…but only the waterfowl (ducks geese etc) have “super” oil glands that allow them to float.

        • I knew they enjoyed water and they like most birds have oil but I would have thought that after enough
play in the rain they would have sought some refuge.

  6. Should anyone see a baby on the ground the number for the Department of Wildlife is 800-945-3343. The wildlife officer assigned to Stark County is Mark Basinger 330-245-3041.

      • Yup, put them on your speed dial 🙂 I had gone on the DOW wesite, and found a # for district 3 (thats ours?) and then emailed them for a confirmation, which I still havent gotten…… But the # on the website is different than the one you listed. And Im sure yours is correct…

    • I’m not sure I’m correct but the site lists the numbers so it’s a start. I’m inclinded to go with
      c

Took the number off their site never sure I’m totally right. I’m inclined to go with C & C since they have handled Peenie now that’s he’s older. It’s probably hard to tell since the only thing to go on at banding is size and they are pretty young at that point. Leave it to Peenie.

    • Funny I always thought he was a boy I guess never paying much to anyone referring to him as ‘her’. That said, and I said this weeks ago birds are sexually dimorphic. In other species the males are the more colorful and larger to attract mates especially when they don’t partner for life. In falcons (at least the one I know something about the Peregrine) being sexually dimorphic means the females are larger but share equal coloration with the male. So maybe that is part of the reason I didn’t pay any attention to him being described as her. And I may have remembered at least one person here say he was a male.
Anyway I’m not quite sure where the idea he was a male came from but again I have always thought that.

  7. Almost forgot – I wanted to thank the many people that were downtown yesterday watching after the babies. (Of course I know you just dreaded every minute) LOL The pictures ARE just fantastic ! Mystic is just amazing… Does Mo know how to do the in air exchanges by instinct, or have his parents and Mystic taught him? Im hoping Ill find time after an appointment this week to go down to see them first hand….

    • You really should take time and a pair of binoculars to watch them. I’m sure you’d enjoy it and this should be fledge week. From what I’ve read the exchanges will be part of the training the parents will impart as they go through the next stage of development. Exciting times ahead.

  8. Peenie took a flight today. I didn’t get to see it but Chris was down there and knew some details. He apparently left the Canton Club and landed on the roof of the Bliss Tower and made his way but to the ledge on his own power. Don’t know if she caught it on pictures but I’m sure if she did she will share. The adults were very quiet this afternoon. I didn’t see them for some time. I believe there was a food drop. And later in the day she brought something and had a tussle with two, Mystic stills likes to feed them even though they are becoming more aggressive with her. She’s a good Mom.

    • Does a baby usually try to make its way back to its family for a while (will Peenie want to go back with his sibs tonite?)

      • Here’s what I’ve learned and it’s always subject to correction.Peenie was back on the ledge and hadn’t left again at 5:30 when Carrollton and I got rained out. Hopefully once they fledge they will return to the ledge. Mystic will guide them back should they land on roof tops. The only fear is that they would land on the ground. That situation becomes difficult for the adult. At that point a rescue is good. If they are on a rooftop Mystic will continue to deliver food to them and it is more manageable for her. Mystic will continue to teach them how to hunt food being very important. I only know that from picking experts brains.

    • I read this note several times… before I read the note on the nest box. I get it. Hey! I never said I was quick to learn. I too, love the title, Admin. I am glad I finally got it.

  9. I was looking over at the forum – a regular comedy club! LOL An unidentified piggy falcon, a dad who brings “used” food parcels,,,,,, 🙂 just wondered too is it the concensus of the experienced falconers that some, if not all of these guys belong to Maurice….?

    • That is difficult to know. A falcon lays an egg approximately every 48 hours. We know she mated with JoJo and we can assume she mated with Mo after JoJo’s disappearance. So the answer is we will never know for sure. It is possible that the eggs could be from two different males. Without blood tests we can only speculate.

      • Cheryl is correct…we can only speculate, however in my opinion, i believe at least one of the young to be Maurice’s…only reason is that Maurice was showed up on cam the day after JoJo was last seen on the cam. Mystic laid her first egg the night after JoJo disappeared….That egg was definitley fertilized by JoJo…
So if there is a span of 48hrs between eggs…that leaves 144 hrs for Maurice to “do his duty”…..and so the speculation continues….but, we will really never know….but it’s fun to theorize! Especially when it comes to “that Peenie”…behaving just like Maurice!!!

Click on the link above to page 9 of the first thread of 2012 for Canton….scroll down and there are the pics of JoJo and Mystic bonding in the nestbox back in march…..if you read the commentary…see the last pic of Mystic and JoJo courtesy of the achives here on CantonClub’s site…
JoJo was a very dark feathered tiercel (male falcon) with a full dark “hood”….very beautiful and fierce….

          • JoJo was very handsome and I wish we knew where he was. That being said, I think we all know how I feel about Mo, and based on the time frame it wouldn’t be impossible that some eggs could be his. Based on behavior (Peenie)
maybe at least one is his.

        • Well, lets see, Maurice is , well can be,,,, responsible (helping Mystic with the babies, )protective, persistent (trying to win Mystic over), smart, (hes trying to figure this whole parenthood out despite being so young) and air headed in a very endearing way…… Peenie has a lot to live up too 🙂

  10. Chris did catch some photos of Peenie’s second flight. The one that he meant to take. Looks like a natural. Great job Peenie!!!! Wish you many more.

  11. Where are the kids? they sleep on the porch now or did they leave the coop.. hope they didn’t leave yet…like getting on and watching them. just found out this year when i heard on fox 8 about this. Wish I would have heard sooner. The birds are gorgeous.

  12. They are still around Vicki, Time spent in the nest box is probably hit and miss. Go to the bottom of the page and follow the second thread of CMNH forum for pictures of their latest escapades.

  13. Tired one in the box 9:53 not sure how long it has been there. Eyes are now open, and looking around. It is so nice to see one there I miss this live feed, but dont get me wrong, I LOVE the forum.

  14. Up and posing. now back in the box, looks like it is looking for food. Still there but laying down in the back. Been there quite a while, would like to stay and watch. Back later

    • Yes, I see 3 chicks now….. Wondering if chick #4 has fledged and Mystic is busy keeping track of it? the one chick in the box looks very warm – has its mouth open…..

  15. Hmmm two little falcons hanging in the nest
Sun’s so hot probably lookin for some rest….

Didnt know I could rap did you ? LOL

  16. I WISH I could have just read the band numbers to see who that was perched in the box..2 others taking a lil nappy. Hes gone now lol

    • I see three babies again. Makes me wonder where #4 is….. Has Mystic brought food for the 3 in the box? Cheryl had said they expected today to be a big day…..

  17. Been nest watching since 9. Should have been a good day on the cam since three were there for a good portion of the day. Except for Peenie who Carrollton found on the ledge at 8:30. And of course we didn’t know how Peenie got to the ledge two stories below where the nest box is but then again it’s Peenie. Carrollton wrote down some times for the happenings and I’m sure he’ll post the info. Atticus and Bravery had their first flights. Chris came down in the afternoon and thank goodness because Bravery required a rescue. He was found by good Samaritans in a window ledge at 2nd and Cleveland. She expertly handled the situation and he was returned to the ledge. Lula had not fledged when we left. Maybe tomorrow.

  18. I hope youre putting on sunscreen, Cheryl! And your little namesake took the plunge today! Congratulations to both of you. And Way to Go Bravery! Do the babies prefer to fly in the morning before it gets hot, or does the heat not bother them much?

    • I think they prefer it when it’s cooler for those maiden flights. But when it got to be a little later in the afternoon everything broke loose today. They were everywhere.

  19. Id like to come see the falcons, but have never been in that part of Canton. As I travel east on Tuscarawas, go past Court, turn right on Market…where is the parking garage? Sorry if this is kinda off topic….

    • The parking deck is on Market across from the Huntington building. I believe the top two floors would give you a good view. Take binoculars if you have them although you can see them with the naked eye.

  20. ok – I was looking at a map and the streets there are one way (right?) and that threw me for a bit…. So if you hear sirens and some crazy woman is going the wrong way on a street, its probably me…….. 🙂

      • Yes, just got home ! It was so Great seeing the falcons in actiion…. Also got to meet Chris the photographer ! When I first came, two perigrines were flying quite high, circling and turning. Chris said that had to have been Mystic and Mo because the babies cant fly that high yet. But then I saw Mystic and Mo were after this group of turkey vultures….. They both flew at them several times and drove them off.. Later Mystic wanted to get Moto do a mid air food exchange(according to Chris) but Mo wasnt feeling cooperative… ( C’mon Mo !) We saw 3 babies on the left side of the ledge, not sure where the other one was. I dont think Lula has fledged yet And a great time was had by all!!!!! 🙂

        • That’s great. I’m so glad you got to see them and meet Chris. She’s amazing. I’m on my way down there now I’ll let you know what I see.

        • Sounds wonderful. Havn’t visited the cam much today but everytime I did, there was nobody home. AND since I didn’t hear any major sirens, I guess you went the right way on all those one way streets- LOL

          • yes – LOL !! I am pretty much a country girl, and often Murphys Law is a way of life for me…. But I DID it ! I sure wish I could go tomorrow with milder temps, but got too much stuff to do…. Id love to see Lula fledge….

  21. Just got home. At 7 they were all on the Chase Building two must have come in from the back because I never saw them. I decided to watch a little longer because Lula was walking the ledge flapping and a gust of wind picked her up a few feet and I thought she might go but she came back down and I didn’t see her again. Not today I guess. One of the boys took off and practiced hovering and then made a beeline for the antenna and landed on the roof. Momma Mystic soon appeared and joined him. His flying looked more steady than those first few flights when you could hear them thinking “just let me get to the next roof.” Lula is going to be a real beauty.

  22. Well I think it’s time for me to move to the CMNH forum. Our brood has other things to do besides visiting their nest. I hope to make it downtown and take a few pictures with my digital. I’ve ordered a new zoom lens for my Minolta SLR which was a lot cheaper and it will do well in the future since I’ve been using an SLR for film back when my Canon AE1 Program was new 🙂 I can now get film developed to digital media instead of prints so that’s one way to cheat 🙂 Hope to see everyone on CMNH.

    Willy

    • Great, Willy! I think youve wanted the better lens for some time…. Now you can take some beautiful pictures of the teenagers and post them on the forum!!

      • In the works! I can go directly from a film negative to digital usurping the need to buy a $600 lens for mu digital SLR. I’ve been into photography since the Canon AE1 Program was current. And it still is current! 🙂 I’m going to buy an auto focus
300mm lens for my Minolta Maxxus II T si and get back to my film roots. I like digital and I have a digital camera that does an effective 430mm zoom but I’m going to take some test pics with the Minolta and see how they transfer directly to digital.

  23. Susan thanks for going and watching over these beautiful birds for awhile. It’s not easy keeping track of four teenagers. I’m sure you enjoyed every minute. They are an additive passion. Their flight is one of the most incredible things I’ve seen. I’m glad you got to see the interaction with the Turkey Vultures. Notice how she warns and warns when in fact they are probably no match for her. She only does what she needs to do to survive or protect her family. Oh and a note on Mo, when Preenie was all over the building, it was Mo that was checking on her and luring her back. I’m going to give him credit for that. And when a juvie took flight he was right there flying with them and Mystic. I’m hopeful for him. Can’t wait to see what he looks like as an adult.

    • Yes, I reallyl enjoyed it!! I was impressed with watching Mystic in flight – so smooth and effortless and graceful. It was almost mesmerizing to watch her…. My husband doesnt like me going into Canton, being on the garage roof alone. He let up a little when I said Chris was there. Later today I’ll join the forum. Would you be willing to PM me as to which days next week you, or someone would be at the garage, so that if I went again, there would be other people there? By the way, Chris was telling me that when Maverick was alive, He would NOT let people watch his family from the roof. I guess he would dive bomb them pretty emphatically!!

    • LOL! It seems like Mo is learning what is required of him. Mystic must be a great teacher as well as a great Mom. Would the turkey vultures harm the teens? I was always under the impression that they only ate dead/decayed “food”… But then again I feel like a 1st grade student with SO very much to learn. I love all the information… Keep it coming!

    • Oh and by the way – youre always saying Peenie acts just like Mo…. Well I told Alison that Mo is persistent ( in persuing a relationship with Mystic) , protective , and smart (trying very hard to figure out this whole parentling thng.) So Peenie has a lot to live up to!! 🙂

  24. The nest box cam may be empty for now….however, when the juvies have begun to hunt a bit on their own and do there own thing….I hope the cam is still up and running, because the post breeding season bonding should begin…..
I really want to see Mystic and Maurice, in the nestbox, together, since they never got to properly bond, due to the circumstance’s…..They will have that time soon….after the young become more independant…..

    • Thanks for the “heads up” about things to come.. Im such a newbie I thot the cam was pretty much going to be retired for the year. Yipppee – except that I tend to put off doing housework…….

  25. Susan if you want to watch a little of the bonding behavior that Carrollton is referring to you can see it starting on the Harrisburg PA cam where a new female is in residence with the established male.

  26. OK – Dont laugh, but I tried one time to join the forum, and I made 2 mistakes and they told me I had to try again later…. Thats how it is with me and computers…. I dont follow procedures well, and I forget needed to interact within the forum… But I am very motivated to do this thing so Ill keep trying….

    • Hey!! If I can do it. So can you. I have had to go back to my profile several times to fix what I messed up. So hang in there and you will get it.

      • Well, maybe you or Cheryl can help me… I got thru the 1st step, but wanted to see the slide show, does it tell u how to do things? It wouldnt play?? I like to surf on my computer but dont do a lot of “processing” things – like picture posting or that Avatar thing…..? Any advice will be greatly appreciated…. And it does make me feel better to hear others say computers make them crazy too…

  27. I think you’re on. I put a few pictures from tonight. Believe me I had a hard time doing that. I need additional training.

    • It took a long time for me too, and it is still a learning process…to post multiple pics on the same comment just click on the browse button under the first pic you started…to put commentary in….that gets a little more complicated..but you can edit away…before you “post reply” all you want…preview button is VERY helpful!!!!!!!

  28. Hey Alison, been wondering where you were….. Its hard watching your baby grow up and get all big, isnt it 🙂 But he really needs to be careful about peeking in windows all the time! LOL

    • Yes those windows are scary. I didnt like the pic of him hitting the window 🙁 But it does seem he either sees his reflection and wants to look into them. LOL How funny. Well I hope he stays around so we can see him.. I visit the nest a few times a week..sometimes just a walk around the block..I havent seen much of them so I check the forum to get updates. No name change needed. But Peeking Peenie seems to have a lil personality. I will always remember his lil face in the picture from the wedding people. He was DEF looking in.

  29. Yes Alison, This window thing with Peenie is bordering on obsessive/compulsive behavior. You may need to chat with him. Windows are not his friend. I thought after he smacked into one, he’d learn his lesson.

  30. One possibly 2 are in the nest box. 12:08 -12-11 Couldn’t believe my eyes! To far into the back of the box. It really looks like 2

    • Since the nest has been vacant I cut back the number of stills captured to once an hour, I reset it back to once a minute. Is someone going to help going through the 43,200 images a month? I will need to moving some of the older images off-line sometime in the future, let me know if any of you want a copy before I do.

      • I prefered the hour incraments for this time of year you had up….but I am only one of many on here, so I will leave that up to you..Thank you!

        • One hour are fine with me but I am not sure I should be saying. I am still going through the back views could you give me about a week? Also, I don’t know what you mean about going through the stills but if I can do it from home I would be glad to assist.

          • Yes, what would be involved in looking over the stills? Would it be as simple as you assigning me a set to peruse, and I note which should be kept? Now, remember the computer and I have an uneasy alliance, so dont ask me to do anything tricky, or heaven knows what might happen to your photos. 🙂 And Admin – I really appreciate all you’ve done the past 6 months!!
