The video kept stopping, so Im not sure who got what… but I think one chick got the majority of it, and the one in back didnt get any. They definitely licked their plate clean!!
OK – I need some information from the “pros” The video stopped both times as the food was brought to the box. So does Mystic bring food to each chick , or she just brings it and the bossiest chick wins? Tell me more……
Mystic is back, only this time she is feeding them herself? I cant tell if these are the ones who ate before, or is she making sure all the babies get some this time?
Looks like the most aggressive chick eats the most. She is still feeding them all. I saw one large chick walk around the others
to one on the right side who she was feeding. This chick then butted
in and she started feeding it. So it’s really not much different than with other species of birds I guess. The more agressive chicks get
more to eat. I don’t think the parents are programmed to make sure each one gets its share.
I didn’t see her land. But at 5:35 today she was pulling the food apart and feeding as usual. And she usually takes what she doesn’t feed with her out of the nest when feeding time is over. So I was wondering where the chunk of meat one of the chicks was harboring came from. That and obviously the chicks get all their liquids from the solids they eat. I was wondering if that changes when they get out on their own or as adults do they still not need to drink water.
If you poke around on the forum and look for the pictures by Chad and Chris you will find they have captured Falcons in the water. Seems they do enjoy it.
Yes, it does change when they are out on their own. They love water..to drink and play in. lol Ive heard a few Falcons over Ohio are drawn to the water. The babies get enough from the fresh food at this point.
Feeding time again, this time however out on the Poop Deck 🙂 7:30 PM
That’s what I thought Susan but I’m checking on the forum. Maybe I misunderstood. Believe me I’m just learning so I’m always open to correction by people that have been watching this process longer than I have. You might want to look ath the forum at the Akron nest, I just realized the male there, McKinley came from the Canton nest. That might interest you. seems like he has a family now. great photos.
Thanks- I think its so interesting how the falcons who are born locally will sometimes turn up within a year of their birth, and yet some are never located again. Ive seen that one chick from last year, Moxie has a nest out in Ft. Wayne In. Does anyone at the forum know where last year’s chicks Storm, Rover and Midnight are? I guess I just have to hope and pray they are doing well…..
I know Storm has a nest, but I cant think of where right now. and yes Beautiful Moxie over in Indiana. She is a gorgeous!! She will probably have lil falcons next year! 🙂
Hey Cheryl, I hope I didnt get you in “trouble”, just thot Id try to be helpful… 🙂 I do enjoy looking over the forums. I thot the falcon female from NH that turned up at an apt. building near Cleveland was so cool. But then the thread ended – she has disappeared again? Chris and Chad went there to visit and take pictures….
FWS stands for Fish and Wildlife Service, Cheryl….The silver band is numbered for that agency, ODNR is the other leg bands/numbers…On the Midwest Perigrine Database you can search by either leg band and its corresponding numbers…or, by the many other options as you know… 😉
“Diamond” is the resident female at Niagra Falls…The link is to the thread, page three, scroll down….Diamond is the female offspring of Maverick and Priscilla, hatched 2009 here at Canton…..
I may be all wet, but I think I found Mystic’s sister, Caspian.
(They say she was born in Canton in 2008) She has 4 babies 🙂 She is up in Missisauga Canada. Am I correct?
Very good Susan! Caspian is not Mystic’s sis or daughter….Caspian was hatched to Maverick and Priscilla…and is sister to Diamond….
There are a few more out there….
Matrix, (one of my favorites) was at Columbus last year with Durand but he disappeared over the late fall early winter, when the cam was down…..
YES!!! Mom came with food out on the porch, and 3 babies were out there eating away while Humble One stood perching longingly on the box. He leaned forward farther, farther, he jumped off…. Walked up to momma and……. Got some food!!! Way to GO! Is that Atticus or Bravery? (I worry about him)
There is one that seems to hold back a bit. I suspect it is one of the males albeit I can’t tell which one. I think of him as quietly composed. Sometimes it’s the quiet ones that carry the most strength. He may be the one that will rise to the occasion when needed.
So you think he’s getting plenty of nutrition to supply him with the strength and energy he’ll need to fledge and then survive on his own…….psst dont tell admin I worry about him…..
just susan the worry wart wondering if he gets enough food to supply his needs so he can be a strong capable falcon when he grows up…… dont tell admin I said that…..
So Carrollton am I messed up on the bands? I thought the girls were purple and the boys were another color. It was a little hard to hear in the room when they were banded. I thought the numbers were on the red/black bands. I didn’t realize the colors were temps. So there are numbers/letters on all three bands for ID purposes? Also can the order of the laying of the egg and hatch affect the development of the chick?
I did not even notice they HAD colors on till a still shot yesterday…I entirely missed that they had put then on…
Most likely the females have them.?… I do not know….
Susan, I really wish they had put on a different color for each…It is temporary tape but helps with the id on these live cams….Maybe next year! 🙂
I wish they had sweatshirts with their names on them but that would inhibit the wing flapping and that is so important. Carrollton let us know what you learn. It was so noisy in the room at the banding that I became very confused after the red/black bands. And the Fish and Wildlife Dept, when did they come in to play? Susan for someone who didn’t think she could post on the forum, you seem to be quite adept. I think you’ve learned more than most. Now I’m tracking where you’ve been. Excellent research.
FWS is involved due to the peregine’s status as threatened nationally and at one time (not to long ago) it’s status was endangered…
Each state has it’s department of wildlife…
that’s where the bands come into play…
—–left leg is state bands….(two) with large single number or letter on each band….
—–right leg is national band…with tiny numbers you have to have in your hand to read…..
There Mystic sits, just out of the night light, keeping an eye out. These are the times I like the best, when I know Mom is there keeping an eye on them. How the chicks are changing, it seems like everytime I look at them they look more adult. Time for bed. Good Night
PS: today I saw some of the down blowing around.
Yep all four nestled side by side in a row front to back now. Mystic just barely visible to the left. No more room for her to stand by them inside, they take all of it up from the front to back. She’s turned now 180 degrees and is looking over the side of the porch.
Mystic has moved to a different position. Wonder if she is keeping them from wondering off the ledge. She has not been to the left except for the last couple days. Carrollton let us know what you come up with on the bands. This fish dept is new to me. Thanks for that. That explains the Durand nest in Columbus. Now I understand why they can’t remove the eggs.
Getting agressive. When I got here this AM box was empty. Then one by one they all appeared. Then started pecking at each other. Someone must have gotten up on the wrong side of the nest. LOL
Allison, on this site you can yak all ya want – thats pretty much what its here for. There isnt really much to do that would be thot of as ” not following the rules” The forum, I think has more rules about posting and what you post. Generally the people on it Are understanding, but some get a little upset at people who “dont follow the rules”… I dont know how to personal message people either, but if you could get Cheryl to explain the ins and outs of forum talk, Im sure you’d do fine:-)
Mom tried to leave with the carcas of the bird, when she looked toward the camera, one of the chicks took it. Now it is hoarding it away from the others. This is a very interesting morning. One thing they are not learning is sharing. LOL
I saw that too, they not only took the carcass but then yelled at mom! They appear to reaching the age of teenagers when they see how far they can push their parents.
They are developing skills out of instincts that will allow them to be successful hunters. So I would expect them to be more agressive as times passes and they are ready to be on their own which is coming very soon.
Admin. I hope there were stills of 7:54-7:55 AM Two of the chicks were very agressive with Mystic. Before, she flew out of the nest, she was almost pinned in the back of the nest box. This is amazing.
Man, a bad day to put off getting on the cam !! Looks like I mised lots of intersting stuff…. I can hardlly believe our sweet little chicks would be so mean to their mom!! ( They are like teenagers, arent they) I assume they do this every year at this point? This years chicks arent more aggressive than usual?
And- would they be a aggressive with their “Daddy” falcon if he came in with food?
Hey anybody that knows – When a “Canton” falcon is identified as nesting at a certain site, does that site notify someone from CMNH? I know when the New Hampshire falcon was found up near Cleveland, the NH people were notified….
Cheryl, you were talking about McKinley, who is up the Akron nest…. Wasnt the male falcon there before called “Bandit”, and wasnt Bandit Maverick’s father? And so is McKinley Bandits grandson? I get my wires crossed sometimes, but what do ya think?
Flying? I swear I saw one chick looking out of the nest box all around up and down seeming to be tracking a close flying object and all of a sudden one of the biggest chicks comes into view flapping wings on the porch as the other chick followed it with head movements. Sure seemed like one was flying while the other watched.
Bandit was the male mate of Chesapeak. They raised chicks for 2 years I think. Bandit died when he flew into a window at the bus terminal around Feb or March. I dont have exact info. I heard that he had been in a fight earlier in the year but I think it was a hawk. Not sure but might give you something to go on. Chesapeak and McKinleys chicks have been banded not sure of sex but I think there were 4.
I remember seeing other birds like Robins with their offspring close.
It was easy to tell the young robin had just finished molting the down.
Markings and colors were not quite as acute as the adult. But it managed to fly well. If there aren’t some of these flying yet it is very soon to happen. Within a couple days from the looks of things.
Yes, but they arent jumping off a 14 story building…. but maybe they can catch some “lift” from air currents at that height? Sounds like you have a little experience with cameras, Willy – GOOD LUCK with your picture taking! Better wear a hat in case they try to poo on you 🙂
Just came back from downtown viewed the nest for a couple hours. Maurice is differently present. The chicks are walking the ledge and there is a lot of flapping going on. Carrollton may have some pictures of the happenings posted to the forum later tonight or within the next day or so. I also suspect admin may have a new slide show for us soon.
What I should do is just drive downtown and take my Nikon with the 18-70mm lens and snap some pics. I suppose I can figure out where the nest is right?
The best vantage point seemed to be the parking deck across from Huntington. You can get a pretty good view of the nest box and we were lucky enough to see the adults in flight.
Thank YOU!!! Band pics close up and personal….You can even read some of the numbers on the purple FWS band in DSC06698!!!
Helped answer my questions….
Your pics are just Fantastic!
Tell Chuck Thanks as well!!!!
Enjoy??? Beautiful, fascinating, awsome. I was truly amazed. Thank You. Such beautiful birds. If this is what you got on a short trip, It would take hours to view all of the shots.
Well that saves me a trip! Good pictures, now I know what the end of the deck looks like and that they can jump off it and walk the ledge around the building. What camera/lens did you use?
I thought you might have had a big lens. I got to get something bigger.
That word should be definitely present. Had my neck bent back too long. Susan there is a site called the Midwest Peregrine Falcon Restoration Project. You will find info on the nests and the known whereabouts of banded falcons.
Got some of the pics posted Cheryl!! The one pic (when we first started watching from the garage)
and she/he almost flapped off the edge… came out ok, but slightly blurry. When you see it you’ll see just how close we came to a rescue!!!!
So once they start flying, will they still be coming back to roost at night, etc? OMG what will I do when they have fledged the nest? Possibly the laundry, clean house, weed the garden, wash the windows… Miss them – that is a definite YES. It looks like they are all present, but I don’t see Mystic :(( Maybe later
LOL Cool pictures, Carrollton!!! Thank you so much ! Someone better have a talk with the one little guy about the law of gravity….. No wonder Mystic isnt with the kids tonite – Shes worn out from chasing Mo out to do some hunting….
Thanks admin. Nice photos and you got the band numbers. It goes to prove what I’ve been telling Alison. Is that Peenie biting Atticus’s toe Alison? I told you she’s been picking on him from the beginning.
Got up, nest empty, Then Mystic came with food… (our teenagers were a little better behaved this AM), I love it when they feed on the “p-deck” food gone… Mom gone… teens gone.. nest empty again.
Hi – Everyone out at the parking garage looking at the real thing instead of posting? 🙂 Thanks so much for those pictures, admin. I could find ID numbers for Bravery, Atticus (poor guy getting his toe chewed on ) and Peenie, but couldnt find one for certain that said38U for Lula…. She’s not the one that hangs out in the box more than the others, is she? Or probably she didnt happen to pose with her foot sticking out for us to see her number… probably aftraid Peenie would chew on it……LOL
I think the only way you are going to catch the teenagers now is from the parking deck with a pair of binoculars. I’ve logged on several times today and the nest was empty. Just now there was a tail hanging over the roof edge. Couldn’t tell if it was one of the teens or Mystic. I suppose by now they can flap and jump on the roof and the camera structure. Won’t be long before they fledge. It’s been really an interesting time watching since the eggs were laid. I’m very happy to have stumbled upon the link st the Cantonrep online.
That’s exactly where I would expect them to be, on the ledge. Doing wing exercises, jumping into the wind and trying to hover. I know they now fly from the ledge to the nest porch having seen one land so they do it in baby steps first until they gain the strength and confidence and then off they go out into the wild blue.
Dont blame it ALL on Peenie….. In one picture the chick who was chewing on Atticus’ toe pinned Atticus’ foot down with their foot. And his band was exposed….. 45M BRAVERY! (Its one of the tight closeups that admin took..)
I had to laugh to myself – Just checked the box around 10:00 andEVERYBODY is totally out – no little eyes blinking, no stirring around. They really had a busy day!!
I would expect them to hang around for a little while. But as I understand they are somewhat migratory. I wouldn’t expect them to winter in this nest as the reading material I’ve been gleaning my information from would suggest.
You might want to make a link to all those pictures Carl took of the chicks for the future.
Or ask him if it’s ok to download them and store
locally on your PC. It may very soon be the last images of them you can view. 🙁
Susan you are correct. I didn’t see Lula’s band in admins pictures so she may be the shy one or maybe he didn’t capture her at the right moment. They are all exploring the ledge now so the shy one is out there but someone has to go first and someone has to go last. Maybe the last egg to hatch. Since the eggs are laid every 48 hours and hatch at different times it could be just a time frame thing. They all seem healthy and as we saw today everyone is out of nest. And yes Carrollton they are sleeping soundly and I think we know why. Susan if you have a chance go down and watch from the deck you will enjoy it and have a new perspective. It’s very different when you are there. Take your binoculars. It is quite the show.
You expect them to fledge soon, right? And then how long will they hang around the area being trained by Mystic and Mo to catch prey? I really do wish I could get over there to see them. Here’s a dumb question – because sometimes I wonder what will come of them….. (and not that I expect Canton to do this,,,) But does any country or organization put tracking devices on the babies so they can be tracked?
Susan. My understanding is that the fledge occurs 40 days to 6 weeks after they hatch so it will be upon us soon. As far as I know, no falcons are equipped with a tracking device. The best we can hope for is a sighting. If you check the Harrisburg PA cam you will see the two boys, Blue and Red, return to the ledge. Mystic (and Maurice?) will teach them to hunt when they find their wings. This will be accomplished by passing prey in the air. They will probably return to the nest during this time period. from what I’ve read migration is in the gene pool so where they winter remains to be seen.
Hey thanks! I assume she’s had it on since she was banded? Another juvie wanting to find a mate… Is this common, or are juvie falcons becoming more “advanced” over the last few years? How come canton’s forum is on its 2nd strand, and other forums barely have 4 or 5 pages?
Also, did Maverick used to stay in Canton over the winter? I thinkit was January when they found him dead….? Did Mystic “go south” for the winter? I noticed on the Canadian forum the girl was already at the nest but the boy didnt come for some time…
I do not know if either Mystic migrates..or if Maverick did when he was alive…
It seems the adults that do not migrate hold their territories much longer than those who do….
Yes, Quest received the transmitter at a young age. Go to this link for more interesting info: http://rfalconcam.com/rfc-main/
Hold your curser over “blogs” on home page.
at the bottom is tracking quest info.
Just so you know at that falconcam site…the eggs are due to hatch in a week or so….That can relieve the “withdrawl” from here…:)
22:33 Movement: one of them is up and disturbing the one beside it. Just trying to clean the feathers, and to find a comfortable spot. 22:37 now the one in back is up cleaning his/her feet, scratching its head and trying to get everyone up. Is this the hour of “Midnight grooming”? Back to just one awake. I don’t see Mom but I will bet she is near. We are so blessed to have these views. 22:43 Goodnight,
Ho Hum, another question from Susan……. Do you guys shut this site down at a certain point? Are we allowed to save pictures from the pictures files on this site? Am I going to have to go through “Falcon Withdrawal”?
I think I see two right now…… they must come and go a lot when its this warm… Have you seen Mystic come in with food? Maybe she’s just making deliveries to the ledge. Looks like its just me and you minding the store, Suzette 🙂
Hi Cheryl – Just wondered how you think Mystic “feels” about Mo. Has he grown on her despite his youth? Do the “falcon gurus” around you feel Mo is performing beyond his age, and has won Mystics heart, even when he hogs the prey? I guess we humans do that with our mates all the time LOL
I think we just have to wait and see what happens after the chicks fledge. Looks like she is training him and he has stayed with the nest. Seems like he has done well despite his young age. More than expected. I’m hopeful for him but there could be factors that could come into play such as an older male that could run him off. Time will tell.
I am not able to go down and look live. So this is all I have. I have been spending some of the time reading the forums and looking at earlier pictures. I would love to see live. Looks like either Mystic or the male is on top of the box. no one is inside right this instant.
Suzette. You might also enjoy the site Bird cams around the world. BCAW there are many links to active sites and lots of photos. It would help with withdrawal as these four explore the ledge.
I know!! But there’s worse addictions to withdraw from. Personally I hope this gets me into that beautiful Passages At Malibu Center with the endless pool, acupuncture, and hot rock massages.
Thank You I went there. Fascinating. I love owls and have quite a few pictures of some babies that were hatched in a huge laundry basket in Naples FL. They were sent to me by a friend in 2010. I have always been fascinated by birds, but this cam has really gotten my Falcon habits soaring. I plan to visit there often. Thanks again Cheryl!!!
I wish I could afford a better zoom lens for my camera. Admin emailed me and told me exactly what he uses. I’d need about $600 bucks to make it happen for a 70 – 300mm Nikon DSLR lens. He got such good results with his. Heck I’d even settle for a little less money for a 300mm zoom lens for my Minolta or Canon film cameras. I still like using film for some things. 😉
I was up at the Massillon car show and fireworks then to BW3s for wings. Altho on the way home, we went past the nest 🙂 Didnt see anyone. They must have been sleeping lil babies
22:20 and nobody home. Maybe Alison took Peenie to Charm School.
PS: In Charm, OH there is a school (I think it is a Grade School) but, the building says: Charm School. Could this be the place? LOL
Well, I happen to know from personal experience that that’s how they answer the phone – “Charm School” – (Yes Im telling the truth…. ) Im not sure theyd take Peenie, tho, the students there all talk Dutch…. 🙂
Well Peenie had a BIG ADVENTURE today, didnt she ! Thank you to the waitresses, the good samaritan, and Chad and Chris for retrieving her and putting her back out on the balcony. But that picture of Peenie gazing longingly through the window on the balcony at the wedding party that was inside —-just too funny !! LOTFL !!
Thank goodness for Chad and Chris. What they do is amazing. Talk about showing up at the right place at the right time. And that picture is hysterical. Party girl!!!
The video kept stopping, so Im not sure who got what… but I think one chick got the majority of it, and the one in back didnt get any. They definitely licked their plate clean!!

Feeding time again, this time however out on the Poop Deck 🙂 7:30 PM
Absolutely stunning video close up of Mystic feeding her brood. Please see this is archived in at least stills.
Is that the video from back in May? Yes, isnt it great!!
No it was the live video from yesterday when I made the comment. Right in front of the camera maybe just a foot or so away.
And I missed it! I hope Admin puts that in the video cache at the top of this page….
“OK everybody – Mom’s here. We gotta at least act civilized…”
How many of the chicks have the temporary colored purple tape covering the silver FWS the right leg band?…..
Hi – check with Cheryl, but one time she said that the girls have purple leg bands….

Thankyou for your descriptive updates, Suzette. Its nice to be able to catch up on events that Ive missed… 🙂

Soon, she will not be feeding them. but dropping the lunch/dinner and they will go after it.
Admin. I hope there were stills of 7:54-7:55 AM Two of the chicks were very agressive with Mystic. Before, she flew out of the nest, she was almost pinned in the back of the nest box. This is amazing.
I transferred the stills, but did not capture that image 🙁
Thanks for trying. It was amazing. They are really active today. Thanks for all you do for us.
I’m very anxious to see what can’t be seen by the video. Like I said earlier fight school is ready to begin anytime.
Here are some pictures from my short trip downtown.
Enjoy.
Thanks
Sony DSLR-A700, 70mm – 300mm, F4.5 – 5.6
I thought you might have had a big lens. I got to get something bigger.
That word should be definitely present. Had my neck bent back too long. Susan there is a site called the Midwest Peregrine Falcon Restoration Project. You will find info on the nests and the known whereabouts of banded falcons.
So what is Ol Maurice up to any way with these fractious falcons?
Got some of the pics posted Cheryl!! The one pic (when we first started watching from the garage)
and she/he almost flapped off the edge… came out ok, but slightly blurry. When you see it you’ll see just how close we came to a rescue!!!!
So once they start flying, will they still be coming back to roost at night, etc? OMG what will I do when they have fledged the nest? Possibly the laundry, clean house, weed the garden, wash the windows… Miss them – that is a definite YES. It looks like they are all present, but I don’t see Mystic :(( Maybe later
LOL!! They SHOULD be tired! They had a eventful afternoon out on the ledge this evening!!!
LOL!! Get em Peenie!! 🙂 I seen when that happened!! but, I havent seen the pictures..I dont see them posted above?
Go back about 14 posts….
HEY!! Peenie is a Growin girl!! shes hungry!! 🙂
At around 4:30pm I got a call from Chuck said that all 4 were walking back and forth on the ledge to the east (right) of the nest about 80′.
You should spend a few hours down there watching
I was just looking at the sstills Stephanie has on the forum of Mystic feeding the chicks…. Isnt she just the BEST MOM !!!
I’m sorry Alison but she’s going to have to go to the bullying seminar.
Dont blame it ALL on Peenie….. In one picture the chick who was chewing on Atticus’ toe pinned Atticus’ foot down with their foot. And his band was exposed….. 45M BRAVERY! (Its one of the tight closeups that admin took..)
BUSTED!!! LOL
I know. I wondered if you’d catch that. I was still going to try and blame Peenie if you didn’t.
Well, Probably Peenie TOLD him to do it…… LOL
I’m sure you’re right Susan. Peenie is an instigator.
PROBABLY. Peenies other mom is. LMAO 🙂
They are all back at the nest box….Chuck is keeping an eye out! Now we all can relax one more night…..
I had to laugh to myself – Just checked the box around 10:00 andEVERYBODY is totally out – no little eyes blinking, no stirring around. They really had a busy day!!
By “out ” I mean sleeping soundly……….
Yup all in a ducks row sleeping soundly at 21:20. Nice to see that they still seek this.
When they have sucessfully fledged, will they come back here to sleep for a time, or will they find their own spots to spend the night right away?

Susan….Click on the blue link in this message…Check out “Quest”…She wears a transmitter….
Go to this link for more interesting info:
http://rfalconcam.com/rfc-main/
Hold your curser over “blogs” on home page.
at the bottom is tracking quest info.
Just so you know at that falconcam site…the eggs are due to hatch in a week or so….That can relieve the “withdrawl” from here…:)
you betcha ! 🙂 THANKS!!
22:43 Goodnight,
Amen! about being blessed!!
Ho Hum, another question from Susan……. Do you guys shut this site down at a certain point? Are we allowed to save pictures from the pictures files on this site? Am I going to have to go through “Falcon Withdrawal”?
Someone must have had a very busy morning… at 11:40 was sleeping, now is up but still in the box. I am having withdrawl pains already.
It looks like there are 3 back in the box… must be to hot out there. LOL
I think I see two right now…… they must come and go a lot when its this warm… Have you seen Mystic come in with food? Maybe she’s just making deliveries to the ledge. Looks like its just me and you minding the store, Suzette 🙂
Well, and Big Brother Admin…. Hi, Admin!!!
I’m checking the nest on and off this morning. You are not alone.
LOL falcon withdrawal 🙂
Please post if anyone sees one of the babies fly…..
Hey Alison, Where you at tonight? Checking out charm schools for Peenie? 🙂
SO maybe our little one will be bilingual… LOL! Checked the nest this AM 8:40 nobody home.
Peenie fledged today. Chad and Chris were there for the rescue. Check out the forum for photos.
Holy Cow! Its 11:16 pm and No body is home ! Do you know where YOUR falcon babies are?
Night, Suzette, Night Cheryl, Night Peenies other mom 🙂
