  1. The banding event was terrific. Great job everyone. For those keeping track there are two girls and two boys.

  2. The banding today was such a wonderful experience. Thanks to The Canton Club and the ODNR for a most memorable and fun event!

      • I took pictures of them being taken out of the box..from the live feed video(on my iphone) the babies didnt seem to know what was going on. The back of the nesting box opened so fast and they were taken out so quickly. But they were yelling. lol and trying to bite her. It must not have hurt to bad bcuz she never used any gloves with any of them. I noticed while banding, 3 of them were very loud and 1 was quiet for the Most part.

  3. The names will come later. We were all able to submit names to the ODNR and they will go over the suggestions and let us know.

    • Had no idea what size those little things were. There hasn’t been a reference point and I don’t know how big an adult is. They look like they weigh a couple pounds each by now.

  4. Yes, Thank You for the beautiful pictures! It looked to me that one chick was particularly feisty. Its beak was wide open all during its banding, and at one point it seemed to be trying to nip the person who was banding it. Do they try at all to match a chicks name to its personality? They definitly shouldnt name that one “Cuddles” . I’d love to hear any more stories from people who were actually able to attend the banding…..

  5. And Another question…. yesterday was just a banding day, right? Will they ever know for sure who the chicks’ daddy is? If they drew blood samples from the chicks, could they tell if it was JoJo or Maurice? (maybe I watch too many CSI shows)

  6. hey Willy- have you seen Mystic feeding the babies lately? as usual, I seem to always miss it . I wish that little one would step up there for more of the grub!

    • Yes I have seen her feeding today. I was lucky enough just once to tell what the main course was. But it would seem that other birds
are the main course. I’ve never seen anything that could be imagined as a rodent. The way those chicks are growing the feeding is going to need to be stepped up. They will go under a huge transformation this next couple of weeks and will need all the fuel they can get.

  7. that one baby doesn’t seem to be eating much at all i hope it is doing ok? does anyone know if they were checked out when they were banded? just concerned for it, but they have been doing good so far im sure the mom knows best!!

  8. The CMNH forum has a video of the banding of the chicks. Go to page 18. Little chicks Lula, Bravery, Atticus and Peenie – good luck and God Bless!

  9. PS – Anyone from the forum who checks in here too – PLEASE tell “Carrollton” Thank You Very Much for posting the video banding. It is so much fun hearing the chicks squawk, and also seeing how much the youngsters enjoyed it too!!

  10. Windy night tonight! Mom is almost being blown off the perch in front of the nest (not that it would matter) and the babies are hunkered down all together in the corner.

    • Mine does that too… but I dont know enough about computers to do anything about it (except be annoyed)… Is it just me, or is Mystic keeping closer touch on the babies since the banding day? Shes in the nest with the chicks now, and shes been up on the roof of the nest box too.

      • It’s not our computers Susan. It’s the equipment on Canton Club’s end. I logged in at 8:07am 6-2-12 and 60 seconds later the stream stopped. That’s not right even if it’s not a paid service. However this comment forum was still available so the video stream and the forum must have different hosts. Anyway yes, I do see Mystic hanging around atop the nest a lot. Got a real nice closeup of her yesterday for over a minute as she was as close to the camera as she could get. I saw her in the nest a few times yesterday (when the video stream actually worked.) Once, she darted out while she was right next to the huddled chicks so fast they were all startled. Didn’t walk to the edge or anything just leapt out from where she was standing, very unusual.

    • It was 1st Friday in downtown Canton. Alot of activity below the nest. Mystic looked as if she was hiding her kids from the parties on the street. LOL

  11. 10:45 am Brunch time. Looks like another Jay but I wouldn’t swear to it since I wasn’t fortunate enough to catch her bringing it in. But it does bear resemblance
    to the other Jay.

    • And oddly enough the two bigger chicks look to be staying away from the feeding with mom concentrating on the two smaller chicks.

      • Yessss! Just came on to find Mystic feeding the babies. Im glad to hear you say she fed the little guys first. The one little guy isnt assertive at all.

        • Just saw her leave with a wing portion. Definitely a Jay but I doubt enough meat on it for her. She probably is just taking out the trash. And I don’t doubt she feeds herself daily away from the nest.

        • W as just thinking about how much the chicks have matured this week. Im not sure of all the correct terms, but I see feathers growing thru the down, and even the most wobbly chick (last week) seems much surer of himself/herself today.

          • They all hatched by May 13th if I recall correctly. And they fledge for 40 or so days. So that puts them ready to leave somewhere around mid June. I think I mentioned before they will be undergoing some pretty remarkable changes in the next two or three weeks.

          • The smallest one is a boy..but not sure of his name.. I know that LuLu is the biggest and Peenie is the 2nd biggest. She has fed the lil guy Last several times..hes not as jumpy..and he was not as LOUD as all the others at the banding. Ive noticed the last few days, the brothers stay together and the sister huddle together sometimes..and all in a pile too lol

          • And yes, i think in the next few weeks they will explore the porch on the box that we cant see from the camera view. Adult feathers are coming in..but they need almost all of those before they start that exciting part..lol Wont be long!

      • Yeah the stream name owner is streamcdn.eu. And the registered domain owner is StreamHosting.cz. But every URL of theirs I visit comes up http error 404, not found. Czech Republic = .CZ in the domain root. So the camera output goes to them and in turn they provide the content delivery network to stream the video onto Longtail’s JW Player for flash and html 5. Not my favorite player, it doesn’t work well in some cases on Mac OSX and Chrome for Mac. None of the embedded JW player videos on the Canton Rep online will play in Chrome but they play just fine in Safari. Well how’s that for being off-topic? 🙂

        • shhhhhhh- dont tell Willy, but I dont understand a word he just said……… 🙂 except that the video isnt working……

    • I think the main problem with the stream is local with the DSL line, last night the IP was changing quite a bit.

      • I had DSL, it was horrible. Unusable when it rained although AT&T swore the line was clear. I went back to cable and never looked back. I was one of the first 100 to have a cable modem back when TWC rolled them out in the late 90’s. Took them a coule years to work out the bugs and while they did I tried DSL and Direct TV. That was a mistake, both unreliable. Now TWC is pretty much up 99.9% of the time. If you are getting a bunch of DSL modem re-train and re-syncs, there is a problem with the line or modem.

  12. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the Falcon journey. The babies grow
so much each day. Does anyone know the weight of each chick at the banding
    ceremony?

  13. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the Falcon journey unfold. The babies
are growing daily. Does anyone know the weight of each chick at the banding
    ceremony?

    • I havent figured it out. I didnt pay close enough attention to the detail during banding for the males. 🙁

        • There was someone just commenting the other day right after the banding that the names would come from the ODNR. So names were chosen and submitted and the ODNR gave the ok? I’m just curious as to the process, that’s all because government stuff usually takes weeks instead of days to come to fruition.

          • The DOW chose the names from a list we submitted at banding. Its normal for it to come out within days. 🙂

          • C&C from the CMNH forum posted the bandletters/numbers that correspond with the names…..
            here they are:
            38/U (female) Lula
            45/M (male) Bravery
            28/D (male) Atticus
            39/U (female) Peenie

  14. It’s 12:30 am and it’s great to see Mystic huddling over and keeping her babies warm instead of sitting on top of the box! Awwwwwww!

  15. WOW! This is so informative and exciting. I love watching these beautiful birds of prey. I have had Coopers Hawks and Red Tail Hawks around my home, and have enjoyed them. But this is like having a front seat at a live performance. Amazing. Thanks to all who are providing this wonderful site.

  16. Its 5:37 and I see the abdomen area of a falcon keeping watch on the chicks fromthe top of the box. I cant really tell which way the stripes go _ Is it Mystic?

  17. Its 6:04 and all of the babies are fairlly close to the box opening kind of grouped 2 and 2. The two closest ones were fidgeting with each other _ one seemed to pretend to feed the other. Then those 2 both started vocalizing…. Wondering if its the boys or the girls……..

    • The girls are def louder than the 2 males. Ive seen the girls pick with each other almost Every day. It also seems like the girls are usually the ones up front and center. lol

  18. By the way – someone was wondering about the falcon mascot at the chicks’ banding ceremony. A class of children from Fairless schools was there, and the disctrict’s mascot is a falcon…. maybe they brought him along….

  19. One of the big ones was out on the porch just before 8:00pm she was able to hop/flap back in to the box. Then Mom brought dinner for the little ones.

  20. Aha ! Someone is on watch from the top of the box – another one of those tummy poses. I think its Mystic….

  21. when i was watching them on the 3rd it looked like momma brought them a squirrel..wouldn’t swear to it..any body else see that.

    • While their diet is almost exclusively medium sized birds, they will take small mammals and reptiles. A squirrel would seem to leave a lot of debris, we used to hunt them when we were kids, so there should be some telltale signs in the nest. I looked really close in a screen capture and didn’t see any squirrel remains.

    • Willy is correct. falcons hunt in the air so something from the ground would be unusual. If the prey hits the ground they normally won’t pick it up.There seems to be a surplus of birds downtown so I would doubt that they would find prey on the ground. When the babies start to fly and the parents teach them to hunt they will do that by transferring prey in the air. If you would like to see photos of that, check out the forum and look for the pictures by Chad and Chris. They captured it on film.

    • Pretty soon all will follow the bold one’s lead. However I think the front porch is still out of their comfort zone and that’s what makes them want to stay inside. However curiosity can easily trump comfort.
And these little fledglings are only going to get more curious as they grow.

  22. Ah – picture is back…. baby is still out sunning, 2 others are just watching her, saying “show off!” and one is actually sleeping zzzzzzzz.

  23. Yes Mystic did require a rescue. As did one of the boys in Harrisburg PA and Uno from the Terminal Tower in Cleveland. Both found their wings.

    • Where did Mystic fledge from? Very high up? I assume she didnt fall like a rock – she had some use of her wings?

      • Hopefully these 4 will develop enough to flap down safely should they get the itch to fly before the wing muscles are strong enough to do the job properly. I know this man made nest is much safer than an outcropping on a cliff but I would probably have built it so chicks that had no chance of any resemblance of flight could not get out. This is an artificial
environment after all and you might as well make it as safe as possible. The falcons won’t care about home improvements, it’s roosting instincts that makes the choice for them.

  24. That Atticus is such a classy little gentleman and he gets more handsome everyday, don’t you think Alison?

    • Yes and a smart little guy too- always trying to give Peenie more room so she doesnt bowl him over with all that wing flapping….. 🙂

  25. Cheryl, do you think Peenie is the porch walker? I see too that one chick is always very alert, like right now, they are laying in a heap asleep, except for one, who I dont think has even shut her eyes… is that Peenie? Iwish they had color coded them on banding day, maybe little colored bandanas like they do for my dog… JUST KIDDING !

  26. Checked Mystic’s background with the experts. Mystic was born 2008 at the Hilliard Bridge in Lakewood. Her parents were Titan and Hillary. Apparently there are still babies being born there but 2008 was the last year they were banded.

  27. Thanks a bunch Cheryl, Now I remember reading a couple posts on that site. Hillary (died)? and now Titan, Mystics dad had a new mate GG. A falcon’s life must be awfully tough! I can hardly keep track of all the sites that have lost one mate or another this year! So sad… I read on the Ohio nesting sites page that the chicks havent been banded from Titans nest site for the past couple years. Wouldnt that be weird if Maurice came from there?

        • If the winter is mild enough, I suppose around here qualifies, they are permanent residents. They do live almost everywhere except in the extreme arctic and rain forests. Will they nest over here? Your guess is as good as mine since this is the first time I have been following them.

  28. This is the first Ive been on today, and I havent seen her yet, but Ill post when I do see her. I was looking on the forum at the latest adventures of Mo and Mystic. He can be such a tease… I wonder how he would do with two lady falcons that Ive heard can be tempermental- Lara and GG?

    • I usually see her in the moring feediing or on top of the box. I just hadn’t caught her today and I get concerned.

  29. This is the first Ive been on today, and I havent seen her yet, but Ill post when I do see her. I was looking on the forum at the latest adventures of Mo and Mystic. He can be such a tease… I wonder how he would do with two lady if he tried these antics with 2 lady falcons that Ive heard can be tempermental- Lara and GG?

    • Sometimes she hangs out off camera on the camera support structure. Sometimes she’s on the top of the nest where she can’t be seen but most of the time on the right front corner where you can see a couple tail feathers hang down. I’ve been in and out of the stream since about 9 and haven’t caught her yet. Not sure but I don’t think Peregrines hunt in the dark since they usually capture prey inflight. All the chicks look well fed and are going through a rapid metamorphosis into feathered chicks. They spend a lot of time preening while awake I’ve noticed.
